About Brixham Montessori Friends School

Brixham Montessori Friends School (BMFS) is a small independent school located in York, ME, serving children ages 2-11 years old living in the seacoast region of southern Maine and New Hampshire.

Originally established in 1997 as Orchard Street Montessori Friends School, the school moved to York, ME, in 2000 when it outgrew its 500 square foot carriage house in Portsmouth, NH. The move to a 1000 square foot historic grange hall in York allowed the school to add a kindergarten to the 3-6 year old program and add an elementary program. At this time, the school was also renamed Brixham Montessori Friends School (Brixham as the geographic location of the school in an area of York known as Brixham Corner).

In 2006, the school outgrew its space again and with the help of a USDA Rural Development Grant and a successful capital campaign, purchased a 9000 square foot building. The build retrofit was to accommodate three 3-6 year old classrooms, one toddler classroom, two elementary classrooms, an administrative office, a teacher’s room, a combined library and music space, a kitchenette, an art studio, and a storage room for teacher materials. Today, the school is nearly at capacity again, and it is the hope of the board of directors and staff that the school will again realize another expansion goal in the near future to include more administrative and conference rooms, a separate music room, a larger art studio, and a new space for fitness and movement.
